Background
March 2nd, 2009 by Jim Martin

I was born in Little Rock, Arkansas.  I grew up in Dallas (in the Pleasant Grove area) and live there through college.  In 1976, I graduated from the University of North Texas with a B.A. in Business. Administration.  In 1977, I moved to Florence, Alabama and began studying at what was then, International Bible College. I met Charlotte who was from that area and we married in August 1978.  Eventually, we moved to Abilene, Texas where we both began working on Master’s Degrees at Abilene Christian University.  (A few years later, she completed an M.A. in Education in which she was certified as a reading specialist.)  After a few years, I completed the Master of Divinity program.  We then moved to Florence, Alabama again, where I began preaching for the College Church.  During that time, I completed the Doctor of Ministry program at Harding Graduate School of Religion in Memphis, Tennessee.

Where We Have Been

College Church of Christ, Florence, Alabama (1982-1990); Gladstone Church of Christ, Kansas City, Missouri (1990-1993); Crestview Church of Christ, Waco, Texas (1993-present)

Family

Charlotte and I have been married for thirty-one years.  We have two daughters and one son-in-law.  Christine graduated from Harding University (Searcy, Arkansas) in May, 2005.  She works as a sales represenative for the Wrigley Corporation and is based in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  She married Phillip Wood (also a Harding graduate) on September 3, 2005.  Phillip is with Edward Jones Investments.  Our youngest daughter Jamie graduated from Oklahoma Christian University in December 2008.  She works for Northcare Center of Oklahoma City.  She lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

What I Enjoy

Great coffee; warm moist cookies or brownies; vanilla ice cream with cinnamon stirred in; chips and salsa or chips and guacamole; Mexican food (Ninfas, Chuys, or Chipotle).

  • Being with my whole family.
  • Being with Charlotte.
  • Riding my bike.
  • Exploring new unfamiliar places.
  • Walking by the creek near our house.
  • Being on vacation.
  • Going to the ocean or the mountains.
  • Sitting at a coffee place with a newspaper or a good book.
  • Tinkering with my iPhone or computer.

    Dear Martin,

I must say once more that your website is one of the best I have ever seen not just for the design but for the beautiful issues mentioned and discussed. Excellent issues, very very interesting opinions as well as suggestions to “clear” our souls.

I am happy to read you every time.

Anasa, thank you for your very gracious comment. I am glad that you come to this blog.

Are there particular issues that are of interest to you? I ask this because much of my writing on this blog deals with ordinary, everyday issues that so many of us face. Relationships. Children. Money. Time. Marriage. Difficult challenges in life, etc. These are some of the issues that so many of us face at one point or another.

I attempt to address these issues in life from the perspective of one who has found God to very satisfying, very important, and the center of all. It also gives me the opportunity to think about these issues as well.

I like the expression that you use in your comment. The suggestions regarding how to “…clear our souls.” I do think this is important. I talk with so many people who are overwhelmed by life both the present and the past.

Feel free to comment anytime, Anasa. Thanks again.

    Jim,

I have already read some of your posts and I ‘ve found them excellent. The issues are extremelly interesting. Most of all , my favorite, was the “13 ways to mess up your children”. It was accurate, helpfull (extremelly helpfull) and it has helped me to “restart” my role as a mom. Re- evaluation.

I have already translate it into Greek so it would be more understandable to my friends -mothers and fathers.

    Thanks for all

I’ll be back soon, as long as you keep writing!

Anasa, thanks for letting me know that the “13 ways to mess up your children” was especially helpful to you. I am so glad that in some way it helped you to “restart” your role as mom. How wonderful! I am also grateful that you have translated this into Greek. Thank you so much for this feedback. It is very helpful to me.
