No Ordinary Sunday

Yesterday, was no ordinary Sunday.  We got home only to find out that Kyle Lake, pastor of University Baptist Church in Waco was electrocuted as he was about to baptize someone.  Kyle, who was 33 years of age, leaves behind a wife and three children.

I have not known Kyle for very long, maybe a year.  I generally see him about once a month at an area luncheon and had coffee together once.  The other day, I ran into him at Chick-Fil-A, met his children, and we planned to get together to visit again this week.

His new book on prayer, (Re)Understanding Prayer was recently released.  The following is an excerpt. 

"Henri Nouwen said that when prayer becomes a way of life for you, it does not mean that you think about God in contrast to thinking about other things, or that you spend time with God instead of spending time with other people. Rather, it means to think and live in the presence of God. As soon as we begin to divide our thoughts into thoughts about God and thoughts about people and events, we remove God from our daily life and put him in a pious niche where we can think pious thoughts and experience pious feelings. Our instruction in 1 Thessalonians 5 "pray without ceasing," then finds new meaning."

Such events as a tragic accident like the one just mentioned or other tragedies that occur on a daily basis are such reminders of our helplessness.  I have no words to explain any of this.

Yet, I will continue to trust in the God who allowed Jesus to die and who raised him from the dead.  I will contine to trust in him who has been faithful through the ages and is our only hope.
